Practical Gardening volunteering

Who is it for?

Suitable for people who

  • are enthusiastic about gardening
  • can receive instruction and then work independently
  • want to help a community organisation
  • are able to work as part of a team

The farm also seeks to actively engage with people who experience racism and/or are from diverse ethnic heritage and underrepresented in mainstream culture, as well as individuals from deprived areas of the city.

Commitment (days and times)

You can volunteer weekly or fortnightly:

  • Tuesday afternoons 1:30pm – 4:30pm
  • Saturday Mornings 9.30am – 12.30pm

Main activities and tasks

  • to develop and maintain ornamental areas of the garden to be used by our groups and for the enjoyment of visitors – the children’s garden and wildlife area for example
  • to maintain the growing areas of the site, hedge cutting and pruning etc

Skills, experience and qualities you need

  • ability to work independently to complete tasks
  • some experience of gardening desirable but not essential
  • ability to be part of a team and work with others to complete tasks
  • able to take own initiative

This is ideal for someone who would like to increase their gardening skills through productive activity.

Support and training

  • initial induction
  • supervision throughout sessions, sign-posting to training opportunities
  • volunteer meetings with the opportunity to discuss project development with the CEO

The role will provide you with the opportunity to give something to the community and develop the farm.
