Planting and Caring for Veg

planting

Planting by Bonnie
We planted red onions and ordinary ones. Another bed was dug over weeded, raked and watered. A line was used to measure 5 inches between the rows and 5 inches between each onion. A gap was left in the middle to plant garlic the following week. Throughout the following months we weeded and watered our onions. It was and is a never ending battle.

On March 14th 2003 we prepared the ground for planting by removing weeds. We planted lettuces in the plot which was watered well and put the cloche we made over to protect the lettuces. The lettuces were planted in 9” squares. We made beer traps to keep the slugs away from the lettuces.

You will need large plastic tub which must have a lid.Large yogurt pots are ideal. Cut 4 square sections around the top of the pot. Fill the pot with beer and place in the hole dug in the centre of each section of plants.Place the pot ¾ of the way up so that the slugs will go in to the pot and drown. What a way to go!

We designed a seed planting diary click here to see it. Also read about friends and foes in the soil click here
