About the Project

This is a pilot scheme so we are the first gardeners and cooks

We have been learning about the basics in gardening.  As you will see in later pages we covered growing green manures and cloche making,

We also worked on journals to remember what we had done.

It was split into two sections, mornings we concentrated on the gardening or were in the computer room and the afternoon session was with Francine where we studied healthy eating as well as cooking and eating it.

The Healthy Eating Project was developed collaboratively by Windmill Hill City Farm and the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens. It ran between September 2002 and July 2003. Funding was provided by the Learning and Skills Council (West of England).

The project ran as a pilot, and the knowledge and experience gained through setting up and running it will be shared with other community organisations. The project, based at Windmill Hill City Farm, enabled people with little or no formal education or knowledge of farming and gardening to gain hands on experience of producing and cooking good quality, healthy food.

The free weekly sessions were facilitated by experienced members of the Farm's staff team. The project used gardening and cooking as an informal and fun medium through which people could develop basic skills in numeracy, literacy and communication. We are currently seeking funding to continue with this or a similar project. Please contact the Farm if you can help.

All photographs, drawings, and words on this site (except this bit) are the work of the people who took part in the project.
