Windmill Hill City Farm is a registered charity. We do not charge for entry, so every donation we receive helps us keep operating as a community facility for the enjoyment of the public. Donations, whether large or small, are gratefully received and every penny is put to good use.
The impact that COVID-19 has had on the city farm is immense. We’ve acted fast to temporarily lay off three-quarters of our staff to avoid going bust.
About 90% of our funding comes from trading and all of it has gone: café, room hire, school visits, and our nursery, which is focussed on looking after the children of key workers only. We have managed to keep a service for our health and social care clients by switching to a telephone support service, and of course, we’re still looking after the animals.
Even when things head back towards ‘normal’ it’s going to be a slow and unsteady time as we re-build. Our gardeners are all laid off, meaning our harvest this year will get hit. That will knock on to our café which will have to buy more food in from outside. Room hire for meetings and courses will take a while to re-build. The period once things start to return will probably be more difficult than while everything is locked down.
